West End Cottage, Askrigg

West End Cottage is grade 2 listed and is probably one of the oldest cottages in Askrigg, right in the cobbled village centre opposite the church. It has a lovely, large south facing walled garden with meadows and hills behind to give that spacious feeling of the countryside on your doorstep, as indeed it is, yet with the pubs, restaurants and shops within a stones throw. The cottage has a wealth of original features with stone flags, planked floors and doors, and beamed ceilings throughout the cottage, which is filled with nooks and crannies.

The cottage has been restored in an understated yet supremely tasteful fashion, so that it has an air of luxury with features such as the handbuilt kitchen with Rayburn stove and fabulous kingsize master bedroom with its massive beams, but has lost none of its original character which shines through and enfolds you as soon as you walk through the door.

Accommodation

The cottage has a small entrance porch with space for coats and boots, and from this you enter the stoneflagged, beamed front room with its two comfy settees and multi fuel stove. An original (and very deep) storage cupboard houses tourist information, DVD’s, books, games to keep you entertained throughout your stay. Off the living room and also at the front of the house is the cosy stone flagged dining room, with its traditional old round table and chairs and antique dresser. Also off the living room is the original stone shelved scullery for the cottage, now a useful pantry and utility room, with ample storage space. At the rear of the cottage is the pretty hand built kitchen with Rayburn stove (very easy to operate), and from here the back door leads across a grassed area of garden belonging to the house next door, to the old barn behind the cottage, and through this to the south facing walled garden which belongs to the cottage and is for your exclusive use. The barn gives ample storage space for outdoor gear and bikes, and the garden is a real sun trap with a raised patio area with garden furniture.

Back in the cottage there are two charming and spacious single bedrooms on the first floor, along with the family shower room with a spacious and modern power shower. The master bedroom is up a further flight of stairs tucked away at the top of the cottage, with stunning views to the hills beyond. This is a kingsized bedroom with the bed on a raised dais and a massively beamed ceiling-a truly romantic room to hide yourself away in and relax.

We were over the moon with the cottage, it looks even better in real life !

Really pleased with the cottage it is finished to a very high standard

The cottage was simply a delightful place to stay - had everything we could possibly want or need. It was wonderful too to have such a delightful, private garden to enjoy. The views from the cottage on both sides are stunning - to see be surrounded by the beautiful village of Askrigg with the breathtaking Dales as a backdrop - so lucky! Do visit the lovely St Oswald's church and make sure to buy delicious food from Humble Pie (also pretty and useful handmade ceramics). The beer in the King's Arms is delicious (try the Askrigg-brewed beer and ale!), and do pop into the antiques shop - lots of interesting things to browse through - we bought a couple of lovely things!
