Brystone, West Stonesdale

Brystone is a distinctly luxurious yet contemporary 300 year old Yorkshire Dales farmhouse in a divine location in the tiny hamlet of West Stonesdale. If you love to stay in an old farmhouse with a fabulous stone fireplace, beamed ceilings, as many bathrooms as bedrooms, and surrounded by its own gardens with unforgettable views on all sides then this is the cottage for you.

West Stonesdale is between Keld in Swaledale and the world famous Tan Hill Inn, Britain’s highest pub. This is also true walking country on both the Pennine Way, which was Britain’s first long distance footpath, and Alfred Wainwright’s Coast to Coast walk along with many other shorter walks. The River Swale nearby has a series of waterfalls, locally called forces, and many people will recognise Wain Wath Force, Kisdon Force, East Gill Force and Catrake Force, all only a short walk or drive away.

This is a beautiful renovation of an old property brought back into use as a house again. The family have done much of the work themselves with the help of many local craftsmen and this shows in the attention to detail using the original features of the house whilst bringing it into the modern world with all of the facilities that we expect nowadays. Brystone is a traditional 300 year old Yorkshire Dales stone farmhouse which sits within its own walled grounds with gardens on all sides and ample parking for several cars.

You have a choice of 3 doors to enter the house-one into the living room, one into the large utility/play room and one from one of the terraced patios at the rear of the house. The main front door takes you into the beautiful lounge with its old stone fireplace, wood burning stove and ample leather sofas and chairs. From this room you enter the lobby with a hand built oak staircase which is at the heart of the house. The oak farmhouse kitchen is well equipped, has granite worktops and is open to the dining area so is a great space for meals with family and friends. Two steps down from the kitchen into what at one time was an attached little barn is the very spacious utility and playroom-great for storage or as a room that the kids can take over during your stay. There is also a good sized shower room on this floor.

Upstairs there is a stunning master bedroom with a superking oak bed, extra deep mattress and flatscreen TV. This bedroom has memorable views from both of the windows which you can enjoy from the comfort of the fantastic bed. Next to this bedroom is a good sized bathroom. There is also a king sized room, again with views across Stonesdale and a twin bedroom with ensuite shower room, this bedroom can also be converted into a superking room. The furniture throughout the cottage is mainly oak to match the handmade staircase, doors and woodwork of this lovely house.

The owners of Brystone are local farmers whose farm is just up the road and who have farmed at Stonesdale for generations. One of them is a local artist and there are a number of her local paintings in the farmhouse as well as old family photographs taken outside Brystone.

The house sits within its own gardens which are built into the slope of the hill behind. This means that there is a patio at the front of the house and also at the back of the house, with lawned gardens and rockeries on different levels, so that you can enjoy the views and the sun throughout the day. The gardens are either walled or gated and there is also a small garage for a small car or ample secure bike and other storage. There is parking for at least 4 cars. Garden furniture is provided as well as a chimenea. This is a great house for picnics outside in the garden.


Open fire in the living room, oil central heating throughout the cottage, dishwasher, microwave, washer/drier, electric cooker with ceramic hob and twin fan ovens, fridge, freezer, boiling water tap, Kenwood Chef mixer, Slow cooker, utility room with drying space, toaster, cafetiere, flat screen TV in living room Sky TV (Freeview channels), DVD player, radio/CD player, wireless broadband, flat screen TV in master bedroom with Sky freeview channels,tourist information, books, games, shoe cleaning kit, hairdryer, dual control electric blankets on all beds, iron and ironing board, torch, bedlinen and teatowels provided, high chair available on request, ensuite shower room to twin bedroom with shower, WC, wash hand basin and shaver point, house bathroom with hand held shower attachment, bath, WC, wash hand basin and shaver point. Downstairs Wet room with shower toilet and washand basin. Garden with furniture and garage store. Oil, electricity and coal included in the rental. Towels included. Sorry no pets or smokers.

Towels are included

During the winter season (prior to Easter or the end of March and after the end of October) we offer short breaks for 3 nights commencing on Fridays or 4 nights commencing on Mondays, or any combination of 3 and 4 night short breaks, excluding Christmas, and New Year. Christmas, and New Year weeks are also available for a minimum of 7 nights commencing on the day advised in the price list. During the main summer season we offer holidays for 7 nights commencing on Fridays, if a week is not let at short notice we will offer short breaks please check availability and the Late Availability page.

Please note that we charge a Good Housekeeping Deposit of £50 per week or short break, details in the terms and conditions section, the final balance figures include this amount.

If the holiday is booked less than 7 weeks prior to your arrival, then full payment is requested at the time of booking.

Deposits are approximately one third of the total hire charge.
